An Enemy of the People
One of Ibsen’s most acrimonious plays concerns more than just politics. Tomas Stockmann is a doctor at the recently built spa in his home town. His brother Peter is the Chairman of the Board and a local magistrate, and he is one of the leading figures in the town. When Stockmann discovers that the water is contaminated and harmful to health he believes that the whole town will thank him for his discovery. However, under the leadership of his brother the opposition against him escalates. It would cost millions to improve matters, and as a worst case scenario the spa would have to close down. In A Public Enemy from 1882, Ibsen hits out in all directions, confronting all the power factions and political parties of his day. However, being a man who fights for his ideals can also involve a touch of vanity and craving for recognition. Director Runar Hodne has made his mark with his unconventional and challenging performances. He recently had a major success at the Torshov Theatre with the comedy, Volpone. The main role of Stockmann is played by Mads Ousdal.
