08/04/2008 :: 2008 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian poet Henrik Wergeland. (1808-1845). His work, encompassing lyrical poetry, dramatic, epic and historical works and educational writings have a special place in Norwegian literature. Wergeland was a child of the European Enlightenment, and his reputation as “Norway’s national poet” is due as much to his ardent political and social commitment as to his poetry. He fought untiringly throughout his life for religious tolerance, freedom and reconciliation.
As part of the celebration of Wergeland this year, a cooperation project has been developed between Justvik School in Kristiansand, Norway, and Yitzhak Rabin Elementary School in Ashdod, Israel
Until 17 June 2008, children at the the two schools will be in contact via the internet. The intention is to honour Wergeland’s ideals by promoting intercultural dialogue and friendship between children at the two schools, enabling them to get to know each other’s cultures, every day lives, interests etc.
The project uses art as a bridge between cultures by working with professional local artists. A writer and a photographer will help produce digital recordings and web exhibitions for exchange and display on the school websites. They will arrange workshops for the pupils as well as work together to identify relevant topics of mutual interest.
